High school can be a very tumultuous time for young people. It’s those critical four years before entering college or the workforce. It’s also a time when kids are becoming young adults, learning about friendships and relationships, and coming into their own personalities and discovering who they are. High school is perhaps the most important time in kids’ lives, because they are making friendships that can last a lifetime, they’re learning somewhat more advanced material, and they are preparing themselves to go out into the real world. Sometimes parents feel they need to choose between sending their children to a private or a public high school. With the influx of drug use, school shootings, and crime, many parents are opting to send their kids to a private high school instead of a public one. These things can happen anywhere, however, so it’s important for parents to talk to their kids and find out what they want before making any final decisions.

A great help during the high school years is the guidance counselor. Your school’s counselor should be able and willing to set up meeting with you as a parent, and should be able to make time for your child in assisting him or her with various things such as class recommendations and college assistance. High school sports are another very positive thing for kids to participate in. It can not only boost self esteem, but teach them how to work together as a team, an invaluable lesson for real life. The most important thing about high school is the relationships that kids form with each other. Many people keep in touch from their high school years, and end up forming life long friendships. This is worth more than anything, and it’s important that parents remember and value the importance of friendships at this age. Setting boundaries is always good, but also remembering that kids need to be able to express themselves with their friends is important as well. The high school years are precious, and are four years that almost no one ever forgets.
